What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
I find out what is most important to my clients and I ask them questions about their future plans for the home they are purchasing. What is most important to them about the transaction? Do they just want the lowest interest rate? Do they want the lowest payment possible? How long do they plan to live in the property? Will this turn into an investment for them? Will they be buying this house and then making major/minor upgrades to it?
I am not a "cookie-cutter" lender, and I don't treat my clients like they are "cookie-cutter" buyers either.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
1. An FHA loan is NOT a terrible loan! Under certain circumstances it is not the best option for a borrower, but it is NOT a bad loan.
2. I don't need a blood sample or your first born child, grandchild or great grandchild. :) Submitting documentation should not be a terribly daunting task, and it pays to work with a lender that knows what they are doing and does not have a lot of additional rules and restrictions (aka: overlays) that make document collecting such an awful experience.
3. Interest rate is very important, BUT it is not always the MOST important thing. I am proud to work for Guaranteed Rate because I know I have exceptional interest rates in my market, but there are plenty of other products that a buyer should at least be told about when talking about loan types. I make sure to have that conversation with all my borrowers! Most have never heard of many of the other options I suggest, but they all at least learn about them.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
I get to help people live the American Dream of home ownership, and I love my job because of that singular detail. I also enjoy the challenge of making loans work that others couldn't get approved. I look at every client's file as a puzzle. Some are easier to piece together than others, BUT there is typically a way to make them all work, even if some take more time than others.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
My main hobby is my wife and daughter. Ha! If I'm not working, I'm hanging out with them. My wife and I are new to the kid thing, so every moment is a learning experience, but incredibly enjoyable and rewarding. I get involved in community sports too. I'm a competitive sports kinda guy, but also has that techy/"nerdy" side too. I love playing in my city's football and soccer leagues, and I also enjoy hanging out on the couch in front of the TV playing a video game from time to time. :)
