Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
I don't have a typical customer. Every customer has different needs and goals with the home-buying process. Some of my customers have more complicated questions about investment properties, and others are first time home-buyers with very basic questions that seem overwhelming to them. It's my job to navigate the waters no matter how simple or complex.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
My very first question is "what is your goal?" This question opens up a dialogue that enables me to understand how to best help the customer, which loan programs best suit accomplishing their goals, etc.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
That 20% down is needed must be the number one misconception, and it's simply not true. I think another misconception or fear is that the customer won't understand the mortgage process and just crosses their fingers hoping the loan officer leads them in the right direction. A good loan officer will make sure the customer understands the process; a good loan officer will instill trust in the customer. Another misconception is that the mortgage process is time consuming. At Guaranteed Rate we are staffed to process loans quickly and efficiently. As long as the customer is providing the requested documents quickly, it won't take us long to get the file to the closing desk.
What resources could you recommend that borrowers use to learn more about the mortgage process and how to ensure a successful home closing?
I'd recommend that a borrower calls me. The internet is full of misleading "advice." Even if the borrower is not ready to buy yet I love to educate. Education is a huge part of my job. Whenever I present the loan options that best fit the borrower, my goal is to educate them so they understand their options completely and why I am making my recommendations.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
I just enjoy helping people. I love taking the seemingly complex process of buying a home and making it as simple, easy, and fun as possible for the borrowers. I love easing the borrower's mind, relaxing them, and letting them know that I have got them covered in this process.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
I enjoy spending time with my wife, son, cats, and fish. They keep life interesting! I also enjoy playing guitar, writing music, and going to concerts.
