Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
My typical customers range from the first time home buyer to the seasoned buyer purchasing expensive homes. Previous home owners want to know about the lending process and how it has changed if they have owned homes before. First time buyers want a full review of the lending process, which I am happy to explain in detail. For either type of buyer, purchasing a home is one of the most important financial decisions they will make in their lifetime. It's important to give careful consideration to their goals when it comes to purchasing a new home.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
Listening. Hearing what your clients have to say about their current and future financial goals related not just to the home purchase, but how they want to save for the short term and retirement is crucial. Planning around their goals and placing them in the right loan at the right time is the key to any successful transaction.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
I find that many people think that they will not qualify based on misconceptions about their credit scores, minimum down payment requirements, and, quite frankly, bad information from people that they know or the internet. If you are interested in buying a home, talk to a qualified loan officer and find out exactly where you stand in the lending process. Find out what you have to do to put yourself in a position to buy if it can't happen right now. We are here to guide clients into the path of homeownership.
What resources could you recommend that borrowers use to learn more about the mortgage process and how to ensure a successful home closing?
I always recommend reading the CFPB's handbook on mortgages. It comes with every loan disclosure package but anyone can log on to their site and learn so much about the lending process. I truly believe though that the best resource a client can have is their real estate agent. Agents have varied experience with many lenders, so they can let their clients know what to expect, on most occasions, working with specific lenders.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
My greatest enjoyment occurs at the closing table. I attend all of my closings so I can see my clients' satisfaction with the process and most importantly, their excitement about purchasing their new home.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
I enjoy attending concerts and playing music, usually the guitar. Watching my Houston sports teams dominate! I enjoy the outdoors and spending time hunting in South Texas. Mostly, I enjoy my time with friends and family. I adore my wife and daughters, and love attending my kids' sporting events.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I have a tendency to be extremely careful with my clients' pre-qualifications. I treat everyone like a best friend or family member because that is the way I would want to be treated if I was making the most important financial decision of my life. I truly feel like I am an integral part in the process of your home purchase, and I want everyone to be happy with the results.
