Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
Half of my clients are folks that I have worked with previously and are moving up to a larger home or buying investment property. The other half are new referrals from business partners who know that I always put the needs of my clients first when advising them on mortgage options.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
I begin with the end in mind, what are the client's short and long term plans for the property. Is this a home that is a stepping stone to another purchase in the future, or is this where they are going to put down roots and stay for the next 20 years.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
1. That it's complicated, it really isn't, the process is all about numbers and guidelines. If you excel when dealing with numbers and guidelines (as I do), then you should have smooth sailing.
2. That closing a loan takes 30 or more days. The process is becoming so streamlined that we can close loans much more quickly than that, just need a good loan officer to set the loan up properly and a cooperative client that provides the required documentation quickly.
3. Credit scores. Credit scoring is not complicated, you can absolutely improve your credit scores by taking specific actions....but you need a professional to advise you on those actions as many people who are trying to improve their scores go about it incorrectly and their scores drop.
What resources could you recommend that borrowers use to learn more about the mortgage process and how to ensure a successful home closing?
Questions, dialogue with your loan officer and your real estate agent. My policy is to anticipate what questions you would have if you really knew what to ask and address those issues right up front. The process is not complicated if the proper expectations are set.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
Clients coming back to me for another loan and thanking me for the recommendations and advice that I provided to them the last time we worked together. When I have a clear understanding of what my clients want to accomplish I can literally save them thousands of dollars over the life of their loan by helping them to see which option is best suited to their situation.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I love to travel and enjoying flying, but I don't have a passport....so for the past 40+ years my travels have all been within the US. Last trip to Mexico or Canada was in 1977.
