How long have you been in the mortgage business and what inspired you to get into it?
I have over 12 years of experience in the mortgage industry. I have worked in many different areas within the mortgage industry including Residential Home Loans, New Construction Financing, Land Acquisition and Development. I really enjoy playing a key role in working with my clients throughout their home buying experience. I specialize in Residential Mortgage Lending - New Construction, Relocations, New Home Purchases and Refinances, Jumbo loans, Conventional, FHA and VA mortgage loans.
My business is built primarily through referrals from satisfied customers, which means your positive mortgage experience is essential! Your mortgage is a big decision and a powerful financial tool.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
First time buyers need to have a budget in mind for their mortgage payment. They often qualify for a larger payment than they would be comfortable with, so I focus on their budget and not mortgage guidelines solely. I also remind them that they will be incurring other debts and responsibilities associated with owning a home as well as the household items they will need to properly maintain their home.
Tell us about a mortgage product that consumers may not be aware of?
There are options for Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) when a client has less than 20% down/equity. There is the traditional monthly payment for the PMI which is a separate line item in the monthly payment, that can be eliminated once 20% equity is reached; either through paying the principal balance down OR through the value of the property going up. Or there is Up Front Single Premium PMI, which is where a lump sum is paid at the time of the closing. This lump sum may be paid by the lender by taking a higher interest rate. In most cases, the monthly payment is less doing the Single Premium, so depending on how long the customer anticipates being in the house, it may make financial sense to take the higher interest rate and not have a separate line items for monthly PMI.
What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it?
I think the documentation piece of the process is the biggest hurdle for borrowers today. I really believe in educating the client on the mortgage process and setting their expectations accordingly. I am very thankful that I have an excellent team that I work with who are clear and patient to help buyers through it. I also try to be extremely accessible to my clients so when they have questions they can reach me anytime. My job is to help them by providing the highest quality of service. I do not want them to be frustrated along the way.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
I have a wonderful husband, Greg and a very fun energetic 10-year-old son Kellen. I am blessed to have two step children as well. Brooke is just finishing grad school at Whitworth University in WA and Blake is a junior at Mankato State University. We tend to be a bit competitive which explains the noise around our house. We all are very passionate sports fans, especially MN Wild Hockey. We love adventure especially outdoors whether we are boating, camping or out for a ride on the motorcycles.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I played in a women’s football league for 7 years. I loved being part of a team, I'm a very competitive person, and I love being physically active. I believe taking time for myself is a must even when life gets busy. For the last 11 years I have gotten up at 3am at least 3 days a week to get half of my workouts in. It’s taken a few years to realize quality is better than quantity when it comes to most things in life. Two of my favorite sayings, “You’ll have plenty of time to sleep when your dead” and “Action expresses priorities”.
