What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
1. That lenders use your best credit score: Lenders take the middle score from the three bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian). If there are two borrowers on the loan, they take the lowest of the middle scores. I love analyzing a credit report and finding quick ways to increase a borrower’s credit score, so they have more access to loan options.
2. You don’t need a home inspection, especially on newer homes: The home inspection is a crucial step, and some sellers are hoping that you skip it. Without an inspection, you are getting the home “as is”, which includes any problems that comes with the home. Not all problems are exactly visible, so the inspection can save you a lot of time and money in the long run. You will be able to get any items repaired before you close on the home. I’ve learned this from experience. Almost 20 years ago, my wife Carli and I were so excited to make our first offer as first-time home buyers. Luckily an inspection informed us that this was not a home we wanted to start off in. That lesson has stuck with me ever since.
3. Don’t have your credit pulled too many times because it’ll hurt your score: It’s a good idea to compare rates and service from more than one company. I love it when a borrower is informed and has shopped different lenders. I like to bring value and stand out from the crowd with a personal mortgage experience that keeps them for life. A consumer can have multiple credit inquiries from lenders for a mortgage within a 30-day window to shop for the best fit. If 20 different lenders pulled your credit within a 30-day window, your credit score will only be affected as if it was one inquiry.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
I absolutely love everything about my job as a loan officer. One of the greatest satisfactions is when I can see how excited my borrowers are when they close on their new home, or when their refinance is complete and they know they either have a lower rate and payment or they have received the funds for their debt consolidation or home improvement. There’s nothing like helping others obtain their dreams and goals in their lives. I get just as excited as they do when they’re handed the keys to their new home and I love knowing that I was able to deliver the best experience possible.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I was born and raised in Conway, Arkansas and I absolutely loved growing up in the South. I have been married to my beautiful wife Carli for over 20 years. I have two amazing daughters, Samantha and Jessica (ages 19 and 16), one awesome son, Tyler (age 12), and a golden retriever named Thor. I love being with my family! We love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, etc. I love woodworking and competed at a young age in cabinet building and worked my way through college building custom cabinets. I also love to travel. Some of my favorite places are Cancun, Hawaii, Yellowstone, and all of the National Parks that Utah has to offer.
