Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
There really is no typical customer. I work with clients from all walks of life from first time home buyers to people who are downsizing, buying vacation homes, or buying investment properties. I have a lot of first time home buyers referred to me because I take the time to thoroughly explain everything to my clients. First time home buyers haven’t been through the mortgage process before and so they have lots of questions covering all aspects of the mortgage and home purchase process. And you what? That’s okay. I want my clients to be able to make informed decisions as they go along and so I encourage them to ask as many questions as they can think of. There is no such thing as a bad question when you are trying to understand the mortgage process. I will take as much time as is necessary for them to be comfortable with everything.
Typical questions include what the pre-approval process involves, how credit missteps in their past might impact their mortgage financing, what documentation will be required, how long the process will take and what it involves, and, of course, questions about loan programs and interest rates.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
I spend a lot of time getting to know the client. Each person’s long and short-term goals are different and those goals can dictate which loan program fits the client’s needs best. In addition, I always discuss “comfort level” with the client. It's important to know what the client will be comfortable paying for their monthly mortgage payment. I don’t want my clients to overextend themselves and buy more home than they can comfortably afford. There is often a difference between the maximum purchase price range that the client qualifies for on paper and the price range that will result in a payment they will be comfortable with.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
There is nothing better than being at a closing and seeing the smiles when my clients are handed the keys to their new home. I’ve been invited to a lot of house warming parties and backyard barbecues by clients who really appreciated everything we did to help them make their dream of owning a home come true. I go home every night feeling pretty good about what I do for a living!
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
My oldest son and I play in the USA Hockey Labatt Blue Pond Hockey National Championship tournament every year in February in Eagle River, WI. It can be really cold up there but it's a ton of fun!
