How long have you been in the mortgage business? What awards have you won?
I have been in the industry for 10 years. I have been honored to receive the Five Star Mortgage Professional Award for the last three consecutive years. This is in partnership with 435 magazine which highlights the top Loan Officers in the Area. Being that such a small percentage of candidates qualify for this, I’m very blessed to be a recipient for this over the last several years.
What advice would you give new or first time home buyers?
Trusting your team of professionals and having a solid mortgage plan is essential to any first time home buyer. This is the biggest purchase in most people’s life time. I always prefer to start the process with first time home buyers several months prior to them even considering purchasing a home. This allows us to thoroughly go through the entire budget to ensure payments will be very comfortable and all questions are answered prior to even starting the home search. This also gives them plenty of time to look around for that perfect home. Working with an experienced Loan Officer and a talented Realtor can often be the biggest reason for having a successful transaction. Ask lots of questions and trust your team of professionals to help provide you with the most accurate information with your decision. A good team will be supportive and help you make the best decisions especially while emotions are running high.
How has the mortgage industry changed since you started, and what would you expect in the future?
It has gotten so much better since I first got into the business. Ten years ago it was absolutely scary. Now Loan Officers have to be licensed so it has helped prevent a lot of predatory lending and fraud which tarnished the industry for years. A lot of the horrible loans that were presented to borrowers years ago no longer exist which gives consumers more confidence that they are getting the loan and terms they have been promised by the lender.
What part of the home loan process do customers find most difficult and how do you help them through it?
I have always told my customers that the hardest part of the process is rounding up all of the necessary financial documents for Underwriting. During a move, sometimes these documents get boxed up and sometimes are difficult to obtain. Thanks to advancements in online banking and electronical payroll, this has gotten much easier to obtain over the years. It is now much easier to obtain the necessary documentation within minutes when it used to take several days. In situations where a borrower doesn’t have access to their documentation online, we provide several alternatives to obtain what is needed to approve the loan. I have worked with borrowers who have had their financial documents locked up in storage units and we still figured alternative sources to get what was needed to get loan approved.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
1) Shopping for Rate is the only thing that matters. 2) Every lender/Loan Officer is the exact same. 3) Waiting to get pre-approved after they find the home of their dreams
What can borrowers do to insure a smooth mortgage underwriting process?
Be honest about everything. Good or bad, I’ve seen it all and there is never any judgment about negative things that may have happened in the past. The Underwriters will find out anything you’re trying to hide so it’s best to be upfront about it so that we can work on a solution together before they even get their hands on the file.
Summary of where you grew up: family, affiliations, college, high school, etc.
I grew up in Wichita, KS. I graduated from Bishop Carroll High School then spent the next two years at Hutchinson Community College on a baseball scholarship. From there I received another athletic scholarship at Rockhurst University and finished up the final two years of school and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration. I have been living in Kansas City ever since.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
What makes this job incredible is the people you get to meet, help them work through sometimes difficult situations, and more often than not, stay in touch with them for many years. Knowing that you are just a small part in helping to change someone’s lives is incredibly rewarding. I find a lot of joy keeping in touch with families we have helped over the years and watch their children grow into that home we helped make possible to obtain.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I recently developed an admiration for astronomy. I have an app on my phone to track satellites and other cosmic events visible to the naked eye. I’m by all means no expert astronomer, yet. For my birthday my wife got me a telescope and my very own star. Yes there is a legitimate website where you can purchase a star in your name for the very low price of $19.99. They send you the coordinates and which constellation the star is located in. I haven’t been able to see it yet, but it’s out there somewhere! I have found this new hobby to be very grounding, especially when you think about how small we really are in our universe. It’s also been very fun educating my kids about the International Space Station, satellites, and other things flying around the Earth constantly.
