Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
Most of my customers are purchasing a home to raise a family in. They are either purchasing their first home or upgrading to a home to fit of their family. Typically clients want to know how much home they can afford from a monthly payment or cash out pocket perspective.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
The most important first step is open and easy communication about their desires, the community they want to live in and what overall living experience they desire. Most of them are families, and we discuss the differences between the towns they are considering. Very often I'll have past clients who have lived in the areas they are looking in. I find lending to be very localized and those specific discussions are the most helpful. From there we focus on what payment per month works best for their budget.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
They think it requires a lot of cash up front, that their credit is just not workable or that they flat out won’t qualify. There are so many programs available in today's lending landscape there is quite literally a seat for every butt. I’ve never seen someone not able to buy. If you are motivated, it is never “no” but “when.”
What resources could you recommend that borrowers use to learn more about the mortgage process and how to ensure a successful home closing?
I’ve gone through our process, and I honestly think the tools available from Guaranteed Rate and the power of having those tools and control of the scenarios right on your phone is amazing. Beyond that, a GREAT realtor makes all the difference in the world and I dare say is the most important decision you will make other than what house and what lender you use. Realtor, Lender, house in that order!
Are you active in any local associations or community groups, and at what level? What goals and/or success have you helped these groups achieve?
My wife and I take part in numerous charity organizations and events every year heading tables, rounding up volunteers and supporting the organizers with whatever they need. Some of the ones that we care about the most are Christina’s House, SFES, American Diabetes Association, and the Smilow Cancer Hospital.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
Closing day! Nothing is better than seeing a smile that you can't hide. Most of all are the kids who exclaim their plans for their room or their yard or the pet they want to get when at the closing table. I remember how my wife and I felt when we closed on our first house, and it still brings me back.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
At this point, I spend the majority of my time with my wife, kids, and our friends in Suffield. My “hobbies” would be beers around a fire pit or a glass of bourbon at the local watering hole.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
I like to make it fun. I love a good joke and love spending time with people who make me laugh. I do my best to keep things light and fun. People will always remember someone who made them smile or laugh!
