Who is your typical customer and what questions do they typically have?
I tend to love when someone is buying a home. The biggest questions tend to be focused on what their payments will be as well as what they're going to need to come up with out of pocket.
What specific steps do you use to help your customers find the best home loan for them?
It's all about asking questions and asking more questions. Having done thousands of mortgages, I like to say that I'm like a doctor. A good doctor makes no assumptions, asks all the right questions even if they think they know the answers.
What are the top 3 misconceptions people have about the home loan process?
1 - That it's going to be hard
2 - That what happened to their friend, next-door neighbor or the other person giving them advice will happen to them
3 - That they should wait to get a preapproval until they find a home
What resources could you recommend that borrowers use to learn more about the mortgage process and how to ensure a successful home closing?
The biggest thing is to use all the tools that we have. That was one of the many reasons of my coming to Guaranteed Rate. We've got the platform that provides all of those resources. If someone is more of a do-it-yourself type, I'll always be sure to guide them that they're checking the right websites. The other piece is to listen to us and to engage in the process. Being an active participant in the process when someone is buying a home is critical to meeting timelines.
What provides you with the most satisfaction in your job as a Loan Officer?
Getting to know someone's WHY. It's not just a transaction to me. I love knowing why someone is buying a home. Is it a dream? Are they stepping up in life? How's their family going to feel about what they're doing? When you build a solid relationship with someone and take a true interest in them and they trust you enough to share some of those deep things, that's what it's about.
What do you enjoy doing most in your spare time when you are not helping people with their home loans?
Spending time with my wife and our 3 dogs. She'd like me to also include our bunny, though I was duped into that deal! Binging shows, traveling, working out, reading, golf, playing hockey.
Tell us something that makes you unique or something wacky, yet interesting about you?
Saying that I picked up ice hockey at 32 and had never been on ice skates! I'm still playing it after 13 years. In 2016, I shattered my tib/fib at a rink in Walpole, MA and now have a titanium rod in my leg. It makes for a cool story!
